Brain Cancer Risk Factors & Brain Cancer Symptoms

Brain CancerBrain Cancer is in the form of tumors and the symptoms depend on certain factors; the size of the tumor and the location of the tumor and this is because the tumor only has a certain amount of room which it is able to grow.  With this growth it also causes damage to the brain not only due to the size of the tumor but also the pressure it poses on the brain tissue. This pressure is increased by swelling and the buildup of fluid around the tumor. Brain tumors no matter how large or small are considered life threatening because it can compromise arteries and other parts of the brain, such as neurological pathways. The most common Brain Cancer symptoms include: Headaches that are worse in the morning and ease off during the day, Seizures (convulsions), Nausea or vomiting, weakness or loss of feeling in the arms or legs, stumbling and a lack of coordination in walking, an abnormal eye movement or changes in your vision, drowsiness, changes in your personality or memory, and also - changes in speech and speech patterns. When there is a brain tumor in the frontal lobe there might be these symptoms present:

  • There can be behavioral changes and there can also be emotional changes
  • There might be a loss of vision and inflammation can be present in the optic nerve.
  • There can be an impaired sense of smell
  • The person might suffer memory loss
  • The persons judgment can be impaired
  • There can be a paralysis on one side of the body.

When the tumor is in the parietal lobe the symptoms can be:

  • There might be seizures associated with a tumor in this part of the brain
  • There can be an impairment in speech
  • There can be an inability to write
  • There can be recognition problems

When the tumor is in the brainstem the symptoms can be:

  • There can be a difficulty in speaking and hearing that includes hearing loss
  • There can be a change in behavior, the patient can become irritated easily
  • Headaches are associated with this type of tumor
  • Muscle weakness can affect one side of the body or the face.
  • Fatigue and tiredness
  • Vomiting is also another symptom that is associated with this type of tumor
  • There can be vision loss including eyelids that droop.

A tumor in the meninges the symptoms can be:

  • Hearing loss and impaired speech
  • Headaches
  • There can be emotional changes
  • Fatigue and extended sleeping or tiredness
  • There can be seizures
  • Loss of vision can also be a symptom

When there metastatic cancer present the symptoms can include:

  • Headaches
  • Motor dysfunction
  • There can also be nausea and vomiting
  • There can be seizures
  • There can be impairment of some mental functions

Brain Cancer Risk Factors

Please read this carefully! Any Brain Cancer patient on ANY cancer treatment, whether orthodox or alternative, needs to carry with them at all times anti-seizure medication. They also need to be with a person at all times who knows how to use the anti-seizure medication.

The reason is that virtually ALL cancer treatments, whether orthodox or alternative, kill cancer cells and in the process of doing this will create an inflammation in the brain. It is important to understand that chemotherapy does not cross the "Blood-brain barrier", but radiation will. This brain inflammation may cause seizures.

If you are dealing with swelling or pressure of any kind in your brain, immediately deal with an oncologist or surgeon. Let them make decisions about relieving the swelling or pressure. Do NOT depend on alternative cancer treatments to work fast enough to deal with swelling or pressure inside the skull.

The risk factors for this type of cancer can include people who have genetic deletions or mutations or inherited diseases that are associated with brain tumors. The carcinogen vinyl chloride has also been associated with brain tumors and exposure can come from the manufacturing of plastic, pipes furniture, car parts and some house wares. This carcinogen is also present in cigarette smoke and it can be released from chemical plants.

Family history

A small portion of brain tumors occur in people with a family history of brain tumors or a family history of genetic syndromes that increase the risk of brain tumors.

History

Trends point to chemical exposure on the job or people working in certain industries have an increased risk of brain tumors, possibly because of the chemicals they're exposed. Studies don't always agree, but there is some evidence of an increased risk of brain tumor in certain industries, including agricultural, electrical, health care and oil refineries.

Age

Your risk of a brain tumor increases as you age. However, a brain tumor can occur at any age. And certain types of brain tumors, such as medulloblastomas, occur almost exclusively in children. The average age of diagnosis for brain tumors is 57, and about 90% of primary brain tumors occur in adults, they can develop at all ages, usually peaking in two age groups:

  • In adults between the ages of 55 and 65.
  • In children between the ages of 3 and 12.

Risk Factors in Children. Tumors in the central nervous system are now the most common primary cancers in children, but they are still rare. An estimated 3,110 benign or malignant brain tumors are expected to be diagnosed in children each year. Brain tumors in children are more likely to occur in the cerebellum, the midbrain, or the optic nerve.

The incidence has increased over the past years, but there is some evidence that this increase is only due to better diagnostic procedures. The mortality rate has actually decreased. Researchers have attempted to uncover risk factors for childhood Brain Cancer. Some association between a higher risk and the following conditions have been observed:

  • Children treated with radiation to the head for leukemia and who have a specific genetic defect may face a high risk for Brain Cancer. (It should be noted that for children without this defect, the risk is very small.)
  • Having parents with specific cancers. (According to a 2000 study, having parents with nervous system cancers, colon cancer, or cancer in the salivary glands increased the risk of specific brain tumors in their children.)

Carcinogens

Carcinogens are a class of substances that are directly responsible for damaging DNA, promoting or aiding cancer. Tobacco, asbestos, arsenic, radiation such as gamma and x-rays, the sun, and compounds in car exhaust fumes are all examples of carcinogens. When our bodies are exposed to carcinogens, free radicals are formed that try to steal electrons from other molecules in the body. These free radicals damage cells and affect their ability to function and divide normally.

Diet

One growing area of research has examined the effects of fluoride on the central nervous system and brain. Recent studies have found that fluoride is a neurotoxin which can affect cerebral functioning, with some research associating the ingestion of fluoridated water with reduced intelligence. Scientific references in this area from human and animal studies deserve careful consideration from physicians and consumers who want to know how the multiple sources of fluoride we are exposed to--fluoridated water, fluoridated toothpaste, fruit juices and soft drinks, infant foods, and others--may affect such a critical aspect of the body's functioning. Research the link also between Brain Cancer and Mercury, Aspartame and Arsenic.
